How To Build A Log Home

If you ever wanted to enjoy living in a log cabin this is for you!

I always wanted to build a log house, but for one reason or the other the need to live and my desire could not come together.

Then one day I had an idea, why not put an addition on and make it out of stone and logs!

This would be my own little log cabin that I always wanted. I needed an extra bed room so why not?

I began building the house in 1983 and added on in 1993 and 2003 (2003 log addition)

Finally my dream was going to come true. After some research and numerous in curries about logs from manufactures, I decided to go back in time and do it the way they use to in the Olden Days. After all I self taught my self to hand cut sand stone with a Hammer and Mason chisels, why not do the logs my self!

Laying up 3-6 feet of hand hewn foundation stone I began to lay up the logs only on 3 sides. The reason for this is I used pine logs that were dead for a few years yet were not rotten or bug infested. I needed to keep them out of the weather as much as possible, with over hangs and prevailing weather patterns, keep the logs dry at all times. The back wall is all stone so the rain, snow, and sun can reek havoc on that all it wants!

This was a very labor intense build by hand and little help, but the out come was so satisfying and rewarding! The look is very 1800s with a touch of 21st century Tec knowledge, vinyl windows and poly filler for joints made it warm and cozy.

The cost was very affordable because all the material was free except shingles, windows rafters, and sheeting.

Estimated 100 + tons of stone and 75 logs that were all hand cut, and laid with love and compassion. Inside the fire place is10 wide by 14 high and 14 thick out of sand stone that was harvested in the area of my travels in western Pennsylvania.

The entire house is heated with a wood fired boiler in the basement that my dad and I built out of junk that was lying around. The water is pumped through pipe into the old cast iron registers that someone was throwing away! All but the log addition has piping in the tile floor and the fire place. We keep it about 75-80 degrees in mid winter with no extra heating cost.

My wife Robin and I Live in rual Western Pennsylvania, were we enjoy are country life helping others find the same life style we do by working from home. This is what gave me the time that Ineeded to build my dream house just the way I wanted to. This life style can be yours only if you want it. Weight Loss- Lead a Healthy Life

In todays world, there are millions of people who are facing the problem of obesity. In fact, obesity has become a disease that is taking the lives of many people. If you love sugar in Tea or Coffee, substitute aspartame for sugar and make it a point to drink skimmed milk instead of full cream milk. Drink lots of water during the day and before doing and after exercise, you should drink at least 8 big glass of water per 24 hours. Eat more fibres i.e. pulses, grams, nuts, brown rice, cereals and fresh fruits. Eat more vegetable as part of your diet.

Even if you are taking a balanced diet; there is still need to do exercises. It is necessary to warm up your body before exercising and at the end of exercise, you need to cool down. Start by aerobic exercises or by stretching exercises if you are in gym. Aerobics reduces fat and gives you a lean body. Work-out in gyms reduces your weight and also gives you stronger muscles. Do exercise at least thrice a week.

Vegetarian South Beach Diet

The South beach diet has been one of the most popular ways to lose weight for several years. Now there is a new surge in popularity among Vegetarians. Ingredients

3/4 cup dried red kidney beans, soaked overnight
2 teaspoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon whole cumin seeds
1/2 tablespoon chopped garlic
3/4 cup coarsely chopped onions
1/2 large sweet red pepper, seeded and diced
1/2 large green pepper, seeded and diced
3/4 tablespoons mild chili powder
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1 1/2 cups water
1 tablespoons tomato paste
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Instructions

Drain and rinse the beans. Set aside. In a large saucepan, warm the oil over medium-high heat. Add the cumin seeds and sizzle for 5 seconds. Add the garlic, onions, red peppers, green peppers, chili powder and oregano. Saut over medium-high heat for 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the beans and water.

Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Uncover and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the beans are tender. (Add more water if the mixture becomes too dry during cooking.)

Stir in the tomato paste and salt. Cook for 2 minutes. Just before serving, stir in the cilantro.

Space Sunshade May One Day Reduce Global Warming

Global warming is a reality and increasingly its consequences are upon us. We may think that global warming does not affect us but the fact is it has already started to have disastrous consequences. flash floods, droughts, receding icebergs, cyclones are some of the manifestations of global warming. Although we are aware and worried about it and trying our best to control it but no significant impact could be seen.

Scientists have come up with new strategies to tackle the problem. Now a scientist has suggested an ambitious idea to contain global warming. put sunshades in space. Thats right. University of Arizona astronomer Roger Angel suggests putting sunshades in space and has detailed his idea in a paper Feasibility of cooling the Earth with a cloud of small spacecraft near L1 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He suggests launching a constellation of trillions of small free-flying spacecraft a million miles above Earth into an orbit aligned with the sun, called the L-1 orbit.

This spacecraft would form a long, cylindrical cloud and would have a diameter about half that of Earth, and about 10 times longer. It is suggested that about 10 percent of the sunlight passing through the 60,000-mile length of the cloud, pointing lengthwise between the Earth and the sun, would be diverted away from our planet. This would result in uniformly reduced sunlight by about 2 percent over the entire planet and would balance the heating of carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere.

The use of space shade was first mooted by James Early of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1989.

"The earlier ideas were for bigger, heavier structures that would have needed manufacture and launch from the moon, which is pretty futuristic," Angel said. "I wanted to make the sunshade from small 'flyers,' small, light and extremely thin spacecraft that could be completely assembled and launched from Earth, in stacks of a million at a time. When they reached L1, they would be dealt off the stack into a cloud. There's nothing to assemble in space."

Angel proposes to design lightweight flyers made of transparent film pierced with small holes and would be two feet in diameter, 1/5000 of an inch thick and weigh about a gram, the same as a large butterfly. He suggests using MEMS technology mirrors as tiny sails that tilt to hold the flyers position in the orbiting constellation.

The weight of all flyers would be 20 millions tons. But conventional rocket launch system at $10,000 a pound would be too prohibitive. His alternative would cost only around $20 a pound.

He suggests deploying a total 20 electromagnetic launchers launching a stack of flyers every 5 minutes for 10 years. The electromagnetic launchers would use hydroelectric power but even if it uses coal-generated electricity, each ton of carbon used would reduce the effect of 1000 tons of atmospheric carbon.

Once propelled beyond Earths atmosphere the flyer stacks would be steered to L-1 orbit by solar-powered ion propulsion, pioneered by European Space Agency's SMART-1 moon orbiter and NASA's Deep Space 1 probe.

"The concept builds on existing technologies," Angel said. "It seems feasible that it could be developed and deployed in about 25 years at a cost of a few trillion dollars. With care, the solar shade should last about 50 years. So the average cost is about $100 billion a year, or about two-tenths of one percent of the global domestic product."

He added, "The sunshade is no substitute for developing renewable energy, the only permanent solution. A similar massive level of technological innovation and financial investment could ensure that.

"But if the planet gets into an abrupt climate crisis that can only be fixed by cooling, it would be good to be ready with some shading solutions that have been worked out."
